First Burn

Seeing as how this blog is still new, I figured that I would explain that my plan is to come out every Monday with my thoughts from the weekend and whatever else I'm burning on. Today will probably be a random group of thoughts, but every now and then I promise to throw some decent, long, in-depth articles up as well.

-I loved the Hall of Fame game. I wanted to tail gate today, get up and showered and dressed early, meet up with the gang, all the things you might do on a typical game day. Part of that was because a close friend of mine, Andrew Mitchell, was playing for the Bengals tonight, but part of it was because football is back. This time of year just gets me juiced, no matter what is going on in my life.

-The game was pretty boring as far as games go, but there were a few things I thought about while watching. We are a football people. My South-African roommate had his glory months this summer with the World Cup, and while that was fun, it feels like things just got more real now that football season is here. I know there is a lot of discussion of expanding the season, and to be honest, I think some kind of expansion is necessary, but probably not adding more games. My idea was to develop some kind of NFL D-League, that starts in march and is located in more smaller markets, like Portland and Salt Lake and San Antonio, where there are already serviceable stadiums and solid fanbases to support that kind of development. D League guys play eight games, teams scout them, and then in August they can report to camp. As Bill Simmons has recently declared himself the new Minister of Sports in America, I plan on suggesting this as his first act.

-Dan Le Batard wrote a really good article about the the evolution of Media and how it interacts with sports with the advent of Twitter and Facebook and other instant media tools. He brings up several good points, which I'm sure most people will ignore, but it is definitely worth the time you would take to read.

-I've never been really impressed with Tony Romo. I don't want this to sound like I am hating on the guy, because I'm not. I like his story, I think its cool that he likes to market dead brands in mega superstores (his Starter brand in Walmart), and I respect his lineup of babes that he has, er, shown a good time, but I just don't think he is THE quarterback that the Cowboys should have built their future around . I think he benefits from a great organization that knows the secret of winning (offensive linemen) and has traditionally been stacked with well-coached talent and weapons at his disposal. I'm going to bet that Terrell Owens has an impressive year with the Bengals, and that as he and Carson develop more chemistry together, they will become one of the top duos in the league. I guess technically with Ocho being a part of the party, its more like a threesome, or in Ocho terms, tres-some.

-Since April 21st, the San Diego Padres have been either in sole possession of first place, or tied for first place. In the last calendar year, they have gone 91-62, which most likely would have been good enough for a playoff berth, and rank 29th in payroll, and yet no one wants to give this team any vote of confidence going forward, or any kind of attention currently. A friend of mine recently attended a Padres game and his claim after was, "That was the most awesome game ever!!!" They have one of the hottest young arms in baseball, Mat Latos, and have posted more late-inning rallies than any other team in baseball, but because the words "Sox" or New York aren't in the team name, they get downgraded. It happens all the time, and honestly, it is just plain sad that the media refuses to change this.

-As much as I love the Jersey Shore, I'm ready for the hype to die down. As much as I loved watching it, I'm ok with HBO announcing that Entourage will wind up its run in 2011. I can say the same for Gaga, and the upcoming barrage of College and NFL highlight cutups that will no doubt be set to a gaggle of songs from Eminem's latest CD release, and jokes about fantasy football. Its time for something fresh please, people who control my television. Thank you.

-I'm always looking for input from other people about certain things. I'll be doing a feature about Movies that you should rewatch. If you have any suggestions, send me an email at chaseyt.brownbear@gmail.com and I'll consider it for my friday blog. Maybe at some point I'll even give out a prize, although right now the best I can offer is a stick of gum, or some blank cds. Man, I need a job.

-Just ran across this little ditty about Manscaping. Just read it. Trust me. I want to be the John Stockton to your babe-getting game. All about assists.
